Librarians in the US have had to admit they are baffled by the case of the urine-stained library books.

Hundreds of books at two libraries, just 13 miles apart in Cleveland, have had to be thrown out.

Linda Yanko, manager of Geauga West Library, told the Plain Dealer: "I can't even believe we're discussing something like this. It's appalling and disgusting."

She said librarians had been finding new cases or urine-related vandalism about once a month with the recent case coming just this week.

The problems at Aurora Memorial Library began more than two years ago and damaged books have been found sporadically ever since.

Officials admit they have no idea who is responsible - or even if the incidents are related.

Food giant Pepsico is now fizzing in damage-control mode after the company's president likened the U.S. to a middle finger.

The remarks by Indra Nooyi, an India-born woman who also serves as PepsiCo's chief financial officer, came during a speech Sunday to graduates at Columbia Business School in New York, some of whom took offense as an anti-American attack.

She said her analogy "leaves the long, middle finger for North America, and in particular, the United States.

What is most crucial to my analogy of the five fingers as the five major continents, is that each of us in the U.S. – the long, middle finger – must be careful that when we extend our arm in either a business or political sense, we take pains to assure we are giving a hand, not the finger. Sometimes this very difficult. Because the U.S. – the middle finger – sticks out so much, we can send the wrong message unintentionally.

Unfortunately, I think this is how the rest of the world looks at the U.S. right now. Not as part of the hand – giving strength and purpose to the rest of the fingers – but instead, scratching our nose and sending a far different signal.

I am outraged by the remarks of your CFO, Indra Nooyi. No apology can negate the anti-American message in her speech. You do not get to be CFO of a company such as Pepsi and not understand the ramifications of your words. Therefore, until Indra Nooyi is terminated or resigns my family will no longer be purchasing any of your products. Pepsi has always been my preferred soft drink but I will be buying Coke from now on.

I have also checked on your other products and while we use all of them, until this woman is dismissed we will place our business elsewhere.

We are only one family of four, but I expect enough Americans, who are incensed over this, will impact your bottom line fairly quickly. Make a sound business decision and distance yourselves from this woman as quickly as possible. Delay implies ambivalence and you will pay a price if you are not immediately decisive.

In China, Everything is Secret

A New York-based rights group today blasted as a "gross injustice" a 10-year term meted out to a Chinese journalist for releasing information related to the 1989 Tiananmen massacre.

Shi Tao, 37, received his sentence late last month after a procedure that did not reflect well on the reign of President Hu Jintao, Human Rights in China said in a statement.

"Shi Tao's case has raised widespread concern inside and outside of China as a classic example of the Hu Jintao regimes relentless suppression of free speech and free press," said Liu Qing, president of the group.

The group had obtained Shi Tao's appeal documents, saying they highlighted the "gross injustice" of this case.

Earlier reports said Shi was accused of leaking "state secrets" after he posted on the internet a central government gag order that forbade all Chinese media from marking the 15th anniversary of the June 1989 crackdown last year.

Officials accosted him on the street of his home town Taiyuan in north China's Shanxi province, hooded him and unlawfully transported him to the city of Changsha more than 1,000 kilometres away, the group said.

The State Secrets Bureau and the Changsha Municipal Intermediate Peoples Court stated that Shi's crime was transmitting crucial contents of a central government document to the overseas Web site Democracy Newsletter.

But in his appeal, Shi contends his notes recorded a newspaper executive's description to journalists of guidelines issued by the provincial propaganda department regarding efforts to maintain social stability, the group said.

Among the guidelines were observations regarding the possibility of overseas democracy activists finding a way to re-enter China to carry out memorial activities for the Tiananmen anniversary, it said.

"Shi Tao argues that the information he provided to Democracy Newsletter related to public sentiment, which cannot be construed as a state secret," the group said.

China defines state secrets broadly, allowing the government to arrest anyone for revealing a wide spectrum of information it finds sensitive.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of people were killed when the Chinese military stormed the capital in 1989 - an incident that has remained taboo in the Chinese media ever since.

A Russian village was left baffled today after its lake disappeared overnight.

NTV television showed pictures of a giant muddy hole bathed in summer sun, while fishermen from the village of Bolotnikovo looked on disconsolately.

"It is very dangerous. If a person had been in this disaster, he would have had almost no chance of survival. The trees flew downwards, under the ground," said Dmitry Zaitsev, a local Emergencies Ministry official interviewed by the channel.

Officials in Nizhegorodskaya region, on the Volga river east of Moscow, said water in the lake might have been sucked down into an underground water-course or cave system, but some villagers had more sinister explanations.

"I am thinking, well, America has finally got to us," said one old woman, as she sat on the ground outside her house.

Wow, those CIA boys are clever, I wonder if Putin's next. Maybe they should put the missing lake's picture on Vodka bottles.

I See England, I See France

A picture of Saddam Hussein in his underpants was splashed across the front-page of Britain's biggest-selling newspaper on Friday.

The Sun newspaper quoted U.S. military sources as saying they had handed over the pictures "in the hope of dealing a body blow to the resistance in Iraq."

Other photographs showed Saddam, with short, dyed-black hair and a mustache, washing clothes by hand and asleep on his bed. But a U.S. military statement said the pictures might be a year old, contravened Saddam's rights as a prisoner and could have broken the Geneva Convention.

"Multi-National Forces-Iraq is disappointed at the possibility that someone responsible for the security, welfare, and detention of Saddam would take and provide these photos for public release," the statement said.

"Saddam is not superman or God, he is just an aging and humble old man," The Sun quoted the military source as saying.

"It's important that the people of Iraq see him like that to destroy the myth. Maybe that will kill a bit of the passion in the fanatics who still follow him.

"It's over, guys. The evil days of Saddam's Baath Party are never coming back - and here's the proof," the source said.

Well, at least they didn't make him put them on his head. Oh, the horror of it all. Will there be more rioting in tha Arab World because Saddam has been seen in his tighty whities? Somebody should put this picture up on billboards in the Middle East.

Are we running out of useful ways to spend our research resources?

Scientists have developed a system which enables people to stroke a chicken over the internet.

It's seen as the first step to virtual physical interaction, reports Wired News.

The Touchy Internet system was created by researchers at the National University of Singapore.

Users touch a chicken-shaped doll which duplicates the actions of a real chicken through a webcam link.

Touch sensors on the doll send 'tactile information' over the internet to a second computer near the chicken.

This computer triggers tiny vibration motors in a lightweight jacket worn by the chicken, meaning the chicken feels the user's touch in the exact same place as the doll was stroked.

"This is the first human-poultry interaction system ever developed," said Professor Adrian David Cheok who has been developing the technology for nearly two years.

"We understand the perceived eccentricity of developing a system for humans to interact with poultry remotely, but this work has a much wider significance."

Remote interaction could allow people who are allergic to dogs and cats to caress their pets remotely. Used in zoos, it may allow visitors to pat a lion or scratch a bear.

Stop the ACLU has a good one for us today.

The ACLU's Policy 211 is straightforward. "The ACLU supports the decriminalization of prostitution and opposes state regulation of prostitution". They base their argument on several points, including that existing laws are discrimination against women, and the right of individual privacy. They argue that what two consenting adults in private do is their own business.

Business, of course, is the key word here and government has the right to regulate it if it's legal or prosecute it if it's illegal.

Why would any organization want to advance something that is so harmful to society, on the individual, family and community levels? One must consider that the goal of the ACLU is the destruction of the fabric of American society and the reforming of it into an ungodly, socialistic state.

Target America

Someone is offended on a daily basis. Today it's some Arab groups that don't like the Taliban flag in an anti-drug exhibit. Get over it, Hassan, it's a fact of life. To say there would be an outcry if Christian or Jewish symbols were used is ludicrous. There were no Christians or Jews involved. However just to disprove your point, when there has been news about some Klan atrocity we never have hidden the fact that the cross is one of their symbols.
What really makes you look suspicious, is trying to justify Hezbollah as anything other than rabid Jew hating terrorists.
There is no great strain or leap of logic to connect these groups with drugs and terrorism financed by drug money unless of course you have another agenda.


An exhibit on the dangers of drugs and their connections to terrorism did not raise ethnic or religious concerns when it went on display in New York, Dallas and elsewhere. But it has in Detroit. Some members of metro Detroit's Arab-American community are complaining the exhibit at the New Detroit Science Center is insensitive in its use of Islamic imagery and want it changed to ensure it does not offend Muslims.

There are specific concerns over a handmade flag that purportedly belonged to the Taliban in Afghanistan and was given to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, whose museum center in Arlington, Va., created the exhibit.

The white flag carries the statement, written in Arabic, "There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah" and is displayed near rubble taken from the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The Taliban was ousted as the ruling party of Afghanistan by U.S. forces after being linked to Al Qaeda.

But the statement on the flag is fundamental to Islam as a whole and the flag's Taliban connection does not justify its presence in the exhibit, said Hassan Jaber, associate executive director of the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services. Jaber saw the exhibit about two weeks ago at the request of the science center after employees raised concerns.

"If these Taliban use it, and if the vicious and killers have used it, it doesn't mean that there's an association between Islam and drug trafficking," he said. "If they would have used any other religious symbols from Christianity or Judaism, there would have been an outcry in the community. That level of sensitivity is not there."

Sean Fearns, director of the DEA museum, said the flag is meant to illustrate operations against the Taliban -- not to attack Islam. He said a confidential source gave the flag, as well as the poppy pods in the exhibit, to DEA agents in Pakistan in late 2001.

"The purpose of the exhibit is not in any way -- truly, truly in any way -- not to categorize any one group," he said.

The part of the exhibit that displays the flag says both Al Qaeda and the Taliban may have used drug money for their operations. The majority of the exhibit, however, deals with how illegal drugs affect every community and damage the human body, highlighting drug cases in Michigan.

Carolyn Gibson, a DEA special agent with the Detroit Field Division, said she and other agents will listen to any concerns about the exhibit.

Representatives from at least two other Arab-American organizations in metro Detroit -- the Michigan chapter of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee and the Arab American and Chaldean Council -- are expected to review the exhibit, "Target America: Opening Eyes to the Damage Drugs Cause," at the invitation of the science center.

The DEA has also invited representatives from Advocates and Leaders for Police and Community Trust, a group of civic, religious and law enforcement leaders in Michigan, to view the exhibit. The DEA museum must approve any changes in the content of the exhibit, Fearns said.

Fearns noted the traveling exhibit did not raise similar concerns when it was shown in New York for six months before arriving in Detroit in April. It has also been seen in Dallas and Ashland, Neb., since its opening in 2002 at the DEA museum in Arlington.

For Jaber, the exhibit also erred in listing Hizballah on a board titled "What is a narco-terrorist?" While many Western governments and the U.S. State Department view the Middle Eastern group as a terrorist threat, others consider it a legitimate political and military organization in Lebanon.

"This is an exhibit about the impact of drugs," Jaber said. "Let's just make it an exhibit about the impact of drugs and not strain ourselves to make connections."

Visitors to the museum this week differed in their responses to the flag and its Islamic symbolism.

Winnie Nwankwo, 35, of Southfield called the flag inappropriate for the exhibit.

"Kids will look at it and say, 'Oh!' and tie it to drugs," said Nwankwo, a teacher. "They'll say, 'That's what Muslims do.' "

Several minutes later, Maryellen Gross, 53, of West Bloomfield assessed the flag while holding her 12-year-old daughter Marissa's hand.

"Not being Arab American, I didn't connect it to anything," Gross said. "I don't believe all Muslims sell drugs. My kids would never believe that."

Robber Barely Escapes

There's probably a "Fruit of the Loom" commercial in here somewhere.

Italian police are looking for a bank robber wearing nothing but his underpants.

He was one of two robbers who stole £4,500 in a raid on the Regionale Europea Bank in Valle Lomellina.

While making his getaway, he gave pursuing police officers the slip by taking off his clothes and jumping into a canal.

His 48-year-old partner was caught as he tried to swap his getaway car for another one of the same model and colour, reports the Tgcom news website.

The arrested man told police officers his partner ran off because he thought the car swap was not a good idea.

Italian police issued an appeal for information from anyone who had seen the man in his underpants. His accomplice was charged with robbery and the money recovered from the car.

Blame Game Starring Michael Isikoff

Michael Isikoff, one of the two Newsweek writers who reported, based on an anonymous source, that U.S. interrogators at Guantanamo Bay had desecrated the Quran, said "we blame ourselves" for the furor created by the now discredited report.

Who exactly does he mean by ourselves? Why I guess the Pentagon. After all, the government has to be responsible for something bad. If it can't be defiling holy books then it must be misleading the well meaning press.

"The big point that leaps out is the cultural one. Neither Newsweek nor the Pentagon foresaw that a reference to the desecration of the Quran was going to create the kind of response that it did.

"The Pentagon saw the item before it ran, and then they didn’t move us off it for 11 days afterward. They were as caught off guard by the furor as we were. We obviously blame ourselves for not understanding the potential ramifications."

And of course, the press holds the Pentagon in such high regard that they would believe whatever the military said and act accordingly.

Someone's Uncomfortable, Stop the World

Why is it always one family, one parent that wants to screw things up for everyone else? Why don't some Christian parents sue when graduation is held in a secular building because they aren't comfortable in that environment.

Why does this Luchenitser think there is a place where you can make everyone comfortable? I am so sick of these ridiculous suits that are entertained by mad judges that I am willing to look at almost any proposal that will put an end to it.

At least one family wants Palm Bay High's graduation ceremony moved from a church to another site, but the school district says it's not changing its plans.

Attorneys for the family say they plan to file a lawsuit this morning charging that the event is unconstitutional.

The complaint and request for a temporary restraining order, to be filed in federal district court in Orlando, will insist that any religious symbols at Calvary Chapel in West Melbourne be covered or that the ceremony be moved to a nonreligious site.

Though the suit would address only Palm Bay's event, it threatens to disrupt three more public school graduations scheduled at the church starting Thursday and involving about 2,000 students.

"Nobody wants this graduation to be disrupted," said Alex Luchenitser, senior litigation counsel for Americans United for Separation of Church and State, a Washington, D.C.-based group representing the plaintiffs. "We just want this to take place in a way that all students feel comfortable, no matter what religion they believe in."

The plaintiffs would include at least one parent and student from Palm Bay's senior class, and at least one parent of a younger student, Luchenitser said.

Short Circuit Court Screws Citizens Again

A federal appeals court panel has upheld a ruling barring Redondo Beach from using its solicitation ordinance to prevent day laborers from seeking work along city streets.

In an opinion rendered late last week, a trio of judges from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals declined to overturn a preliminary injunction issued in December by U.S. District Court Judge Consuelo B. Marshall in response to a group of day laborers who filed suit against the city.

How lazy can you get?

A burglar was arrested in China after he overslept when taking a nap at the scene of his latest crime.

The 18-year-old had sneaked into a decoration company through an open window and was about to leave with his haul.

But he looked in a fridge first and found some milk and cakes, and decided to sit down to eat first, reports the Xinmin Evening Post.

Feeling a little sleepy after his meal, the teenager pushed four chairs together to take a short nap.

He was still fast asleep, his haul of stolen goods by his side, when the company's workers arrived In the morning.

Staff called the police and the man was arrested.

Guess Who's Unpopular, Mais Oui!

How can this be? Arrogant, pretentious, frivolous, impolite and those are the good qualities. It's nice to know the perception is universal.

Language, history, cooking and support for rival football teams still divide Europe. But when everything else fails, one glue binds the continent together: hatred of the French.

Typically, the French refuse to accept what arrogant, overbearing monsters they are.

But now after the publication of a survey of their neighbours' opinions of them at least they no longer have any excuse for not knowing how unpopular they are.

Why the French are the worst countryy on the planet, a wry take on France by two of its citizens, dredges up all the usual evidence against them. They are crazy drivers, strangers to customer service, obsessed by sex and food and devoid of a sense of humour.

But it doesn't stop there, boasting a breakdown, nation by nation, of what in the French irritates them.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Britons described them as "chauvinists, stubborn, nannied and humourless". However, the French may be more shocked by the views of other nations.

For the Germans, the French are "pretentious, offhand and frivolous". The Dutch describe them as "agitated, talkative and shallow." The Spanish see them as "cold, distant, vain and impolite" and the Portuguese as "preaching". In Italy they comes across as "snobs, arrogant, flesh-loving, righteous and self-obsessed" and the Greeks find them "not very with it, egocentric bons vivants".

Interestingly, the Swedes consider them "disobedient, immoral, disorganised, neo-colonialist and dirty".

But the knockout punch to French pride came in the way the poll was conducted. People were not asked what they hated in the French, just what they thought of them.

"Interviewees were simply asked an open question - what five adjectives sum up the French," said Olivier Clodong, one of the study's two authors and a professor of social and political communication at the Ecole Superieur de Commerce, in Paris. "The answers were overwhelmingly negative."

According to Mr Clodong, the old adage that France is wonderful, it's just the French who are the problem, is shared across Europe.

Spanish business leaders are being told they have to declare any illicit love affairs - to the stockmarket.

In an attempt to crack down on insider trading, the directors of companies quoted on Spain's stock exchange will have to come clean twice a year about anyone with whom they are having an "affectionate relationship".

Legislation will be brought in by the regulatory body, the Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores, in July to try to clean up the image of Spanish business practices, The Scotsman reports.

Company directors must also provide information about their wives or husbands and family, but it is the idea of a "lovers register" - in which bosses might have to admit to having affairs or out themselves as gay - that has sparked reactions ranging from disbelief to fury among business people.

Ricard Fornesa, the president of the huge La Caixa savings bank, described the proposed legislation as laughable.

A spokesman for another leading Spanish financial house, who would not be named, was outraged, saying: "If I had a lover, which I don't, would they expect me to admit it?

Promise Keepers may bring many people and dollars to Fayetteville, but they also bring intolerance, according to a consortium of groups that say Razorback Stadium should not be used to promote a religious viewpoint. "I don’t think this singleminded group should have their meeting here. It’s not an all-encompassing group and we are promoting diversity at the university," said Marian Kunetka, an archeologist at the Arkansas Archeological Survey at the University of Arkansas.

NOW, the Washington County Green Party and the OMNI Center for Peace, Justice and Ecology joined forces to voice concerns Sunday evening about the Promise Keepers rally scheduled June 10-11 at the University of Arkansas campus.According to Dick Bennett, retired professor of English and president of the OMNI center, that very mission speaks to the groups intolerance of others. "They are extremely exclusive in favor of Christianity to the exclusion of all the other religions," Bennett said. "This is a very fundamentalist, intolerant religious organization. Even though they say they are open to all denominations, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, they really mean if those different peoples will convert to Christian," he said.

JERUSALEM – Marking Israel's Independence Day, the Palestinians yesterday held mass anti-Israel rallies, released a new music video mourning the "catastrophe" of the Jewish state, broadcast sermons denying the Holocaust and heard a national address by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas calling Israel's creation a "crime."

Tens of thousands gathered in the West Bank and Gaza, shouting slogans such as "Death to Israel" and "Destroy the Zionists," in a day of "mourning" for what Palestinians call the "Nakba," or catastrophe of the formation of Israel on May 15, 1948.

At the direction of Abbas' PA, a siren wailed at midday yesterday as an expression of Palestinian mourning, with traffic reportedly stopping and gunmen firing into the air.

Israel uses sirens to mourn fallen soldiers and victims of the Holocaust.

The Palestinian media embarked on a two-week anti-Israel incitement campaign, culminating in an exclusive interview yesterday with an armed terrorist praising suicide bombers, Michael Widlanski, an associate of Independent Media Review and Analysis, told WND.

"Good morning to Jerusalem and to Palestine two days before the 57th anniversary of the Catastrophe of 1948 when 31 of our towns and villages were obliterated and the founding of what is called Israel," declared Rafat al-Qudra, official Palestinian television's morning host.

Behind al-Qudra was an image of Israel bursting into flames after which pictures of Arabs being replaced by Jews were superimposed on the screen.

"So began the occupation of Palestine," said the host, who went on to interview a terrorist who had invaded the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem when he was holed up there with dozens of Fatah gunmen in April 2002.

The Palestinian media campaign also included accusations that Israel is planning to attack Islamic holy sites, charges Israel uses radiation poisoning against Palestinian travelers, glorification of dead terrorists and a cartoon in Abbas' Fatah party newspaper depicting an Israeli soldier stuffing a rifle in a baby carriage, Widlanski said.

Palestinian television also debuted an anti-Israel music video for children that claims Israel took Palestinian land, reported Palestinian Media Watch.

"Do you know what happened in 1948?" asks a young girl at the start of the video. "They [Israelis] took everything," she responds.

MATT LAUER: After having looked into this story for so long, I'd like your comment or your reaction to something Matt Drudge just said about a possible DNA trail in this case, that -- that Monica Lewinsky has bragged to friends that she has a piece of clothing that might contain dried semen from President Clinton. Have you heard anything--do you have any confirmation that it might be true?

Mr. ISIKOFF: Matt, look, there's lots of things I have heard about this and other things. I--I...

LAUER: Have you heard that, though?

Mr. ISIKOFF: I have not reported that, and I'm not going to report that until I have evidence that it is, in fact, true.

LAUER: You're not telling me whether you've ever heard it?

Mr. ISIKOFF: I've heard lots of wild things, as I'm sure you have. But you don't go on the air and blab them and talk about them unless you know you have some confidence that it's true.
