NORTH KOREA'S ELTON JONG IL

Are we really going to allow this looney tune to have nukes? He's been wearing Elton John specs, now he has the shoes too.

Kim Jong Il's gone up in the world and backwards in fashion.

Sporting a pair of platform shoes, the diminutive leader - whose exact height is kept secret - can add about 12 centimetres to his stature, judging by a recently acquired picture of him with Russian President Vladimir Putin taken in 2002 and published in the Dong-a Ilbo newspaper.

Without the platforms - which were very trendy in the 70s, particularly with lesser statured rock stars such as Elton John - he is said to be between 155 and 165 centimetres tall.

"Platform shoes are an essential item for Kim Jong Il who fears being ignored when he meets outside leaders and Westerners", said Sohn Kwang-joo, chief editor of the Daily NK, a website that follows North Korean news.

"What would North Koreans think if their leader was such a short man? That's why Kim feels he deserves to wear platform shoes, even if they kill his ankles," he said.
