What is your view on democratically electing the papal leader?

I think we can all heave a great sigh of relief! I was very nervous about this Papal conclave.

Tsurotu, this is the reason for not having democratic elections of the pontif; we would have probably ended up with some liberal American like Wilton Gregory if we had a democratic election. Look at the partisan infighting and machiavellian machinations in our system of government. This serves us well because it reduces the influence and authority of the executive (and legislative) branch of government, but it is a lousy way to run a papacy since the Church has to uphold a higher truth. Papal candidates would speak not for their higher purpose, but to win popular support for themselves and their parties. It would reduce Church doctrine to a matter of consensus-which it is not supposed to be. Church teaching is supposed to be led by the Holy Spirit. That`s the reason for a secret conclave; the cardinals meet to elect the Pope in secret so that they are led by the Holy Spirit, not influenced by popular opinion.

I am not Catholic, and there is a decent amount of their doctrine that I disagree with; but, the thing I do appreciate about Catholism is how they stick to their original dogma, no matter what. I am THRILLED about the new Pope, mostly because Europe hates him, that means something. Now if we could just get our judiciary to follow the rules of our Constitution.

I think Tim answered the papal leader question quite well.
