French voters overwhelmingly rejected the European Union's first constitution yesterday, dealing a potential death blow to the historic effort to unite the continent.
The vote was a stinging rebuke to President Jacques Chirac, who had urged voters to vote "oui" and whose approval ratings have plunged to 39 percent.
Chirac, 72, had said he will not resign, but the "non" vote could kill his chances at a third term.
