This weekend the magazine Focus reported that ransom money allegedly paid by the German government last month was found on Susanne Osthoff by officials after she was released. Susan was the German citizen kidnapped in Iraq and it was speculated that the German government may have paid around five million dollars to win her freedom.

According to the magazine, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Germany's foreign minister, has ordered "absolute secrecy" on the ransom discovery.

This scandal could fall back on Schroeder since Steinmeier is his boy and was hoped to be a challenger to Merkel in the next election.
