Deep Throat, Deep Pockets

All I have to say about Felt is this. I'm glad that the truth about the Nixon regime was exposed. I never liked Nixon, I felt he was an embarassment to the Republican Party. Anyone who was unable to see the man's glaring character flaws was either deliberately blind or stupid.
That said, it's a shame he was brought down by a man every bit as smarmy as himself. I would have preferred Felt had been a man of ideals, as many were who rose to the occasion at that time. This, however, is a self opportunist who seems unfortunately to have passed that gene on to his progeny.
Men like Nixon, Felt and others are the bane of America, men who act, not for the noblest of reasons, but for the basest, self-aggrandizement.

The daughter of a former FBI agent revealed as Deep Throat told a California newspaper that her aging father deserved to let go of his long-held secret but conceded that money played a part in the family's decision to go public.

Joan Felt, 61, has lived with her father in a two-story home near California's wine country for the past 13 years. She told the newspaper there were many reasons her family wanted to reveal his role, but added "I won't deny that to make money is one of them."

It is good that you begin by admitting the flaws of the Nixon Administration, something that many on the right today are still unwilling to do.

As someone who straddles the middle and is unhappy with the direction of the GOP is taking, I am glad that someone is willing to admit this.

However, I think it is a bit ridiculous to characterize Felt as doing this for the purpose of self aggrandizement after holding off for thirty years. He could have done this ten years ago if money was more of his objective. In fact, if I was in his shoes and out for profit, I would have written an entire book about it - only later to sell the publishing rights for millions.

The basest self aggrandizement? A bit of an exaggeration - it seems exemplary of the tendency of the current right to even while accepting criticism of its own side, to vilify the critic.

Putting Felt and Nixon in the same sentence, criticizing both of them for self aggrandizement as if the lack of ethics in each of their actions were even on a comparable scale? Not well thought out, to say the least.

But for an attempt at moderation by an otherwise right leaning blog, an admirable effort.

Had Felt gotten the promotion that he wanted, I do not believe he would have told tales out of class. Therefore, I believe his motivation was far lees than altruistic. As for the money, his daughter seems the one willing to peddle her fathers reputation for whatever it will net her. A sorry lot, all of them.
