French President Nicolas Sarkozy has called for schoolchildren to "adopt" Jewish child victims of the Holocaust. Praising faith, he told France's Jewish community that every 10-year-old schoolchild should be "entrusted with the memory of a French child victim of the Holocaust".
Of course, as it would have here, his proposal unleashed anger from teachers, psychologists, political foes, secularists and the rest of the hand wringers who said it would unfairly burden children with the guilt of previous generations and some could be traumatized.
But, Sarkozy said, France had to raise children "with open eyes".
That is leadership, a quality we are dearly lacking in our own government. I wish President Sarkozy good luck and success in what he is trying to accomplish.
