Libya Unleashes Its Loonies

Libyan lunatics have put the torch to the Italian consulate in Benghazi. The Libyan government "strongly denounces" the actions of those who burned part of the Italian consulate, said the state-run Libyan news agency. Why do I find that hard to believe? Everything in Libya is state run, including protests and nothing happens without government approval. Of course, all of this is supposed to be cartoon inspired outrage but I can't imagine that Muammar Qadhafi himself did not have hand in it.

Freedom of speech, freedom of the press and, for that matter, freedom of association are unknown in Libya. Fathi al-Jahmi, a political prisoner of Qadhafi land, was charged with spreading misinformation, insulting Qadhafi ("defaming the Leader of the Revolution") and unlawfully communicating with foreigners against the interests of the state. So much for them undertsanding a free society.
