The Sheriff And The Cardinal

And now for more on illegal immigration:

Here in Cochise County, Arizona illegal activity is out of control. In recent testimony before a US Senate subcommittee, Sheriff Larry Dever had this to say, " The law-enforcement effort and the communities we serve desperately need your attention to our situation along the border. You should be aware that in our area, almost ten percent of the illegal aliens that are apprehended have criminal records in this country. When we are unsuccessful in catching them there, these predators find their way to communities all over the nation where they threaten the safety and welfare of local populations."

Read Sheriff Dever's complete testimony here.

Meanwhile over at PittsburghLIVE Colin McNickle has a great piece scolding Cardinal
Mahony of the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles for his irresponsible direction to priests in all of the parishes he oversees. He has told them to defy any federal legislation that would require churches to confirm parishioners' legal status before providing assistance.

Mahony is quoted as saying, "There is enormous ignorance out there." Yes, and Cardinal Roger M. Mahony and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops have cornered the market when it comes to this issue.
