Some extremist black group, called Uhuru, is unable to understand the political process. It seems they are mystified by the fact that you can win a primary but still lose the election. They filed a lawsuit last month in federal court claiming the election process in St. Petersburg makes it too difficult to get black candidates elected because after they nominate them in primary elections, they can still be voted down in the general election when the whole city can vote.
As if that demented misunderstanding of the election process isn't laughable enough, a white woman, Darden Rice, won the primary.
Dwight 'Chimurenga' Waller, a black candidate and president of the Uhuru group, said he was not surprised a white candidate won. No one is surprised you lost, Dwight, if your lawsuit is any indication of your political acumen.
"This lawsuit was a part of an effort to stop this takeover of the black community," Waller said. "It's a takeover by a power elite that happens to be white people."
The International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement believes a white person is unfit to represent District 6, which includes parts of downtown and Midtown and has a predominantly black population. Waller has said, he believes Rice should not represent District 6 because of her race.
"She's part of the attempt to take over the African community," Waller said. "It's the same oppressive politic."
Waller said Rice was helped by a redrawing of district lines several years ago that added white voters to the district. Ironically, Rice said she was helped by Waller's assertions.Turnout was very low in District 6, less than 15 percent. But Rice said she could not have led her field without the support of all voters, of all races.
The incumbent city council member in District 6 is a black man, Earnest Williams. He finished second in Tuesday's primary. But Waller said he will do nothing to help him get reelected.
It sounds like the biggest stumbling blocks to electing a black candidate in this district are Dwight and his band of mental midgets.
